So You Just Got an Apple Vision Pro — Here's Everything I Wish I'd Known on Day One
A practical getting-started guide for new Apple Vision Pro owners. Setup tips, essential apps, comfort adjustments, and the things Apple doesn't tell you in the unboxing video.
Congratulations, you just dropped $3,499 on a face computer. Whether you bought it for work, curiosity, or because you watched one too many YouTube demos, the first week with Vision Pro is overwhelming. There’s a lot Apple doesn’t explain well, and some things you’ll only figure out through trial and error.
I went through that learning curve a year ago. Here’s everything I wish someone had told me.
The Unboxing and Initial Setup
Apple’s setup process is guided and mostly painless, but there are a few things to know before you start.
Do the eye and hand calibration carefully. The initial calibration sets the baseline for how Vision Pro tracks your gaze and hand gestures. If you rush through it, interactions will feel imprecise for as long as you use the device. Find a well-lit room, sit comfortably, and follow each step deliberately. If eye tracking feels off after setup, you can redo the calibration in Settings > Eyes & Hands.
Try both head bands before committing. Vision Pro ships with the Solo Knit Band and the Dual Loop Band. The Solo Knit Band looks sleeker and is faster to put on, but the Dual Loop Band distributes weight better for longer sessions. I started with Solo Knit and switched to Dual Loop within a week. Most people I’ve talked to ended up doing the same.
Check the light seal fit. Vision Pro comes with one light seal and two cushions (W and W+). If the seal feels too tight on your cheekbones or you see light leaking around your nose, Apple stores will swap you for a different size for free. A proper seal fit matters enormously for comfort and visual quality. Don’t just live with a bad fit.
The First Hour: What to Actually Do
After setup, Vision Pro drops you into the Home View — a row of app icons floating in your room. Your instinct will be to open everything. Resist that urge. Here’s a better sequence.
Start with the guided tour. Go to Tips in the App Store and run through the interactive tutorial. It covers pinch gestures, eye tracking selection, window management, and environments. Even if you think you understand the interface from videos, the spatial mechanics feel different when you’re actually doing them.
Adjust your eye tracking. Open Settings, go to Eyes & Hands, and verify that the tracking feels accurate. Try looking at small icons and UI elements. If you find yourself staring at buttons that won’t highlight, your tracking may need recalibration. This is the single most common frustration for new users, and it’s almost always a calibration issue.
Open Safari and browse normally. Before diving into fancy 3D experiences, just use the web browser. This grounds you in the reality of what visionOS is: a computer. Open a few tabs, scroll through a news site, watch a YouTube video. Getting comfortable with basic interactions first makes everything else easier.
Try an Environment. Swipe up on the Digital Crown to bring up the environment dial, then turn it to enter one of Apple’s immersive environments — Mount Hood, Yosemite, the Moon. Sit with it for a few minutes. This is the moment that usually sells people on Vision Pro. The production quality is extraordinary.
Essential Settings to Change Immediately
Apple’s default settings are conservative. These adjustments made my experience significantly better.
Turn on Mac Virtual Display. If you have a Mac, go to Settings > Mac Virtual Display and enable it. This lets your Mac screen appear as a window in your Vision Pro space. It’s seamless and it’s one of the most useful features Apple built.
Enable Travel Mode for flights. Found in Control Center, Travel Mode recalibrates the tracking for a moving environment. Turn it on before using Vision Pro on an airplane. Without it, windows will drift and the experience is nauseating.
Adjust text size. Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. If you find yourself squinting at any UI text, bump it up a notch. There’s no shame in larger text, and the resolution supports it beautifully.
Set up Focus modes. Just like on iPhone, Focus modes on Vision Pro let you filter notifications and app availability. I have a “Work” focus that hides social apps and games, and a “Media” focus that clears everything except entertainment apps.
Turn off hand gesture sounds. Settings > Sounds & Haptics. The default pinch-click sound effect is satisfying for about five minutes and then becomes maddening. Most long-term users turn it off.
The Apps to Download First
You’ll eventually find your own favorites, but these are the apps I recommend to every new owner to demonstrate what Vision Pro can do well.
Immersed (Free / $9.99/month Pro) — Virtual multi-monitor setup. If you plan to use Vision Pro for any amount of work, install this immediately.
Disney+ ($13.99/month) — The 3D movie selection and virtual theater environment are the best media experience on the device. Watch a 3D movie on a 100-foot virtual screen in the first week. It’s the demo that makes skeptics understand.
Puzzling Places ($14.99) — A calm, beautiful 3D puzzle game where you assemble miniature models of real locations. It’s the perfect “show someone what spatial computing feels like” app.
Fantastical ($6.99/month) — The best calendar app on visionOS. The spatial week view is genuinely useful, not just a gimmick.
Apple TV (Free with Apple TV+ at $9.99/month) — Apple’s own immersive content is the gold standard. The immersive video experiences — sports, nature documentaries, short films — demonstrate the hardware’s ceiling.
Craft (Free / $4.99/month) — Notes and documents. Native visionOS app that’s fast and beautiful.
Comfort: The Honest Truth
Vision Pro is not comfortable for extended use out of the box. I want to be upfront about this because Apple’s marketing doesn’t address it.
In the first week, limit yourself to 30-45 minute sessions. Your face, neck, and eyes need time to adapt to the weight and the display. Pushing through discomfort doesn’t build tolerance — it just gives you a headache.
After two weeks of regular use, most people can comfortably do 60-90 minutes. I now max out at about two hours before I want a break, and I’ve been using it for over a year.
Neck exercises help. The headset weighs roughly 600-650 grams on your face. Your neck muscles aren’t used to supporting that weight while looking up, down, and side to side. Simple neck stretches before and after sessions reduce soreness.
The battery cable is annoying but manageable. The external battery connects via a cable to the left side of the headset. For seated use, run the cable behind you and set the battery on the desk or couch. For standing, the battery fits in a pants pocket. You’ll stop noticing the cable after a few days.
Consider a third-party comfort mod. Products like the Spigen comfort band and various counterweight accessories can help balance the front-heavy weight distribution. I use a small counterweight velcroed to the back of the Dual Loop Band and it made a noticeable difference.
Things That Will Frustrate You (and How to Deal With Them)
Window management takes practice. Moving, resizing, and positioning windows in 3D space is intuitive in theory and fiddly in practice. You’ll accidentally close windows, stack them on top of each other, and lose things behind you. It gets better with muscle memory, but the first week is clumsy.
Not all apps are spatial. Many iPad apps run on Vision Pro in a flat window. They work, but they don’t take advantage of the spatial display. This can feel underwhelming after experiencing native visionOS apps. The gap is shrinking as more developers build native versions, but it’s still noticeable.
Personas are weird. If you use Vision Pro for video calls, visionOS generates a digital avatar called a Persona. The first version was deep in the uncanny valley. It’s improved, but don’t expect your coworkers to be impressed. Most people react with polite curiosity or mild discomfort. It works well enough for professional calls, just don’t expect it to feel natural.
You can’t use it outdoors. Bright sunlight overwhelms the sensors and display. Vision Pro is an indoor device. The visor is also a fingerprint and smudge magnet — keep the included polishing cloth nearby.
What Vision Pro Is Best At
After a year of daily use, these are the things I reach for my Vision Pro to do, specifically because it does them better than my other devices.
Focused writing and research. Spreading reference material around me in a quiet environment, with no other screens or notifications competing for attention.
Media consumption. Movies, TV shows, and immersive video in a personal theater that rivals many actual cinemas I’ve been to.
Video calls. Surprisingly, the spatial audio and large-format video feeds make group calls feel more present than a laptop webcam.
Design review and brainstorming. Freeform on a massive virtual canvas, or reviewing 3D models and architectural plans.
What It’s Not Great At (Yet)
Quick tasks. Checking a notification, replying to a text, looking up a recipe — anything you can do in 30 seconds on your phone takes longer when you have to put on and calibrate a headset.
Gaming. The game library is growing but can’t compete with Quest. If gaming is your main interest, you bought the wrong headset.
Sharing experiences. Vision Pro is fundamentally a solo device. Screen mirroring to a TV via AirPlay works but is clunky. There’s no easy way to show someone what you’re seeing without handing them the headset.
The One-Week Milestone
Give yourself a full week before forming opinions. The first two days are overwhelming, days three and four are when you start developing habits, and by day five you’ll know whether spatial computing clicks for you.
If it does, you’ll find yourself reaching for the headset before your laptop for certain tasks. That’s the moment when Vision Pro stops being a novelty purchase and starts being a tool. Not everyone gets there, and that’s fine — the technology is still early. But if you do, you’ll understand why people who use it daily find it difficult to go back.
